03.03.2009 American Red Cross launches Heroes campaign

imageWhen Penny Kimbrough lost her Iredell County home on Dec. 10, she lost more than a house.
She didn’t have clothes, bedding, medicine for her family and – of course – food. Thankfully, the Greater Carolinas Chapter of the American Red Cross was able to provide her assistance for all of these things – as well as a place for her nine-member family to stay.
“The Red Cross was there for us,” she said.
And in the last year alone, the Greater Carolinas Chapter has been there for 314 families like Penny’s due to a house fire or other disaster.
Penny has been able to get back on her feet thanks to Red Cross volunteers and donors – the true heroes of our organization.
That’s why during the month of March, the Greater Carolinas Chapter will recognize and thank our volunteers and donors during the Hometown Heroes campaign. Our Web site, http://www.redcrosshelps.org, will spotlight a nationwide “hero” every day during March, which is also Red Cross Month.
The Heroes campaign is a fundraising effort through which communities can pull together to help their neighbors. Money raised through the campaign is funneled directly back into the community through Red Cross programs and services.
The Greater Carolinas Chapter’s campaign benefits the Lake Norman and Statesville offices. Key programs such as Disaster Services, which helped Penny Kimbrough and her family, as well as the Transportation Program are supported by the generosity of the surrounding community.
Key events for the chapter’s campaign include:
• Family Fun Day at The Pit: From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at The Pit in Mooresville. Ride go-karts, play laser tag, have lunch and take a Red Cross course on safety — everything is included in our family-friendly price. Buy tickets at www.redcrosshelps.org/thepit.
• Lady of the Lake Cruise: From 12:30 – 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 5, take a cruise on Lake Norman and enjoy shag dancing, food and fun. Call Queens Landing to purchase tickets or for more information at 704.663.2628.
