08.17.2010 Red Cross becomes primary blood supplier of area hospitals

Effective September 1, 2010, the American Red Cross will become the primary supplier of blood and blood products for the following health care facilities in the Greater Charlotte area:

  • Presbyterian Hospital
  • Presbyterian Hospital—Huntersville
  • Presbyterian Hospital—Matthews
  • Presbyterian Orthopaedic Hospital
  • Presbyterian Hemby Children’s Hospital
  • Upstate Carolina Medical Center in Gaffney, SC

“The Red Cross is delighted to become the provider of choice for these health care facilities,” stated Joyce H. Brendel, chief executive officer of the American Red Cross Carolinas Blood Services Region.  “We have partnered with these facilities extensively over the years and are pleased to be able to take our partnership to another level.”

“The American Red Cross is an outstanding organization, and Presbyterian Healthcare is pleased they will be our source for the life-saving blood often needed to care for patients in our hospitals,” said Joy Greear, vice president of support services for Presbyterian Healthcare.

The Red Cross has collected blood from voluntary donors throughout the area for more than 60 years and will continue to do so in order to provide the blood needed by patients in these hospitals.  Operating as a community blood center, with the advantage of a nationwide reach, the organization provides blood for patients in the local area first, but is also prepared to respond in cases of national or major regional emergencies, such as power outages, floods and hurricanes across our coastlines.
