CHARLOTTE – The Greater Carolinas Chapter of the American Red Cross was alerted around 6:45 a.m. Wednesday to a three-alarm fire at Creekwood Apartments off East Independence Boulevard.
Red Cross volunteers provided breakfast and drinks to residents, members of the Charlotte Fire Department, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and other first responders.
Twenty units were affected by the incident. Of those, Red Cross disaster assessors deemed four were destroyed, one sustained major damage, seven had water or insulation damage, seven had minimal to no damage and one unit was vacant.
The Red Cross is working with the management of the apartment complex to place affected residents in other vacant apartments in Creekwood or other complexes owned by the company.
Because clients may not be placed in furnished apartments, they will also receive cots and blankets from the Red Cross. The chapter is providing comfort kits as well as other assistance to these clients on a case-by-case basis.
Red Cross volunteers and staff will remain on the scene through the afternoon, providing lunch for first responders and working with clients to ensure their needs are met.
