Advanced Disaster Courses

Community Disaster Education Instructor Specialty

18 hour course – no fee

The purpose of this instructor specialty course is to prepare instructors to teach Community Disaster Education workshops ensuring uniform, quality activities consistent with the goals and directions American Red Cross Community Disaster Education. This course provides opportunities for practice teaching with direct supervision in a classroom setting, and opportunities to receive evaluation and support in development of instructional skills, as well as the benefit of the experiences and skills of other participants in a learning environment.

Pre-Requisite: Fundamentals of Instruction and Facilitation or Disaster Instructor Specialty Training; a currently authorized instructor for the Red Cross, Fire Service, or Emergency Management in any discipline, or a teacher for a school, college, or university. Instructor or teacher training must be documented; Have made approximately 25 basic Community Disaster Education presentations on a of subjects to different audiences in the last three years; Have in-depth knowledge about natural hazards, and know where to direct people to find out more information about them; Have excellent skills as a presenter to the public.

Disaster Instructor Specialty Training

16 hour course – no fee

The purpose of this course is to prepare instructors of Basic and Intermediate Disaster Training Courses for effective teaching, thereby ensuring uniform and quality disaster training consistent with Red Cross policies and the regulations and procedures of Disaster Services.

Pre-Requisite: Introduction to Disaster Services, three [3] other Basic Disaster Training Courses and Fundamentals of Instruction and Facilitation

Family Service Supervision I

16 hour course – no fee

The purpose of this course is to prepare assistant casework supervisors to work directly and effectively with interviewers to provide efficient and consistent emergency disaster assistance to families. The course deals with supervisory knowledge and skills and the process of helping interviewers.

Pre-Requisite: Introduction to Disaster Services and Emergency Assistance I and II

Fundamentals of Chapter Disaster Operations Management

12 hour course – no fee

The purpose of this training is to prepare Red Cross employees and leadership volunteers to manage a small disaster relief operation, which is chapter managed and accounted and at least partially funded by the Disaster Relief Fund.

Pre-Requisite: Introduction to Disaster Services, Family Services: Providing Emergency Assistance, Mass Care: An Overview, Disaster Assessment Workshop, Client Assistance Card WEBEX Training, Operations Data Management – Self Study and Collaborating to Ensure Effective Service Delivery

Service Delivery Site Management

13 hour course – no fee

The purpose of this course is to prepare Red Cross volunteers and employees to establish, operate, monitor and close a service delivery site, to meet the needs of disaster clients in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Pre-Requisite: Supervision in Disaster, Fundamentals of Chapter Disaster Operations Management, ranked and served as a supervisor (any group activity) in a service delivery site on at least one multi-chapter disaster relief operation OR a director of a chapter’s disaster program with experience at a service delivery site and leadership experience

Supervision in Disaster 

15.5 hour course – no fee

The purpose of this course is to prepare participants to function effectively as Disaster Services supervisors.

Pre-Requisite: The Basic or Intermediate Disaster Course for the function in which the applicant expects to become a supervisor and experience as a worker in the function in which the applicant expects to become a supervisor.
