Haiti: Two Years Later

Two years after the Haiti earthquake, the American Red Cross is helping people rebuild their homes and their lives and improving communities with health, water and sanitation projects. In a two-year update, the American Red Cross highlighted its emergency work after the 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti on January 12, 2010, as well as its recovery efforts over the past year.

During a home fire, working smoke alarms and a fire escape plan that has been practiced regularly can save lives.

Red Cross springs into action after ammonia leak

Yesterday, an ammonia leak at the Pilgrim’s Pride plant in Marshville (Union County) spurred the evacuation of workers and residents.

Volunteers from the American Red Cross set up a temporary evacuation site at the fire department in Marshville. The Red Cross also provided lunch for approximately 100 first responders and dinner for 50 responders.

As temperatures rise, the Red Cross offers safety tips for staying cool. In addition, the massive heat wave encompassing much of the country is hurting blood collections at a time when the Red Cross has been working to rebuild its inventories to adequate levels.

Local Red Cross Blood Supply Drops to Critically Low Levels

The American Red Cross is facing a critical blood shortage and has issued an appeal for blood donors.
Eligible blood donors are asked to please call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to find a blood drive and to make an appointment.
